Kick-off Meeting

As soon as the project begins, we set up a meeting (Skype or in-person) where we go through the project details together, have the initial brainstorming and set out a delivery plan.

AThese meetings can happen a couple of times depending on the complexity of the project.

Stakeholder interviews

I'll speak to all the stakeholders in the projects which can be your partners, co-founders, product managers & anyone else who might have feedback, suggestions & ideas on the product.

Discovery

I will do my basic research apart from all the information I have gathered in the meetings & calls so far. This will be a collaborative process where you give me everything you think I should know about the project & I run you through my research as it progresses.

Service Blueprint

Together we'll chalk out what your current state is in terms of product offering, user demographics & market position.

Competitive Analysis

I'll take a look at what your direct & indirect competitors are doing, both good & bad. It may include the exhaustive list of features, USPs, marketing strategies & even pricing. It could act as a good base to start with.

Brainstorming

We brainstorm on whatever we have found so far. The goal of brainstorming at this stage will be to make sure we're all at the same page in terms of the product's vision. This is when we discuss small pivots whenever required.

Value Proposition

We discuss what our list of offerings would be and what would be our value proposition or USP when it comes to the competition.

User Research / Personas

I do my research on your target users & come up with personas. The personas will be at the front & center during the entire duration of the project and whenever you build additional features later.

Key Performance Indicators

We identify what measurable metrics would determine the success of your product. This will also help us focus on areas which should ideally need the most attention.

Product workflow

This is where we work on creating a map of how a user uses your product and what steps do they have to take to reach their desired goal behind using your product. The product workflow will help us identify & fix the challenges and redundancies early.

User Journeys

User journeys are somewhat similar to workflows, except that the user

journeys will be more specific to each of your personas. Additionally, apart

from the user's objective, each of the feature might have a separate user journey.

Information Architecture

Its similar to workflows, but a little more screen specific. This is where we

think of what components each of the screens in the process could have.

This gives us an insight on the number of steps a user needs to take to

complete a particular task.

Feature Roadmap

Since building all the features at once massively delays the launch, we build a feature roadmap to see what features go first and then rest of the features in order of release. This will be done based on a lot of things like the value proposition, popular features of the competition, effort needed to build a particular feature, and impact of a feature on sales or retention.

Use case scenarios

I'll research on the scenarios in which your product will be used by the users. This includes their demography, location & even financial status. This also includes the misuse scenarios where users could try to game the system or use loopholes which hurts either the reputation of the product or cause financial losses or both.

Sketches

Based on all of the above, I will start sketching the screens for the product. This will be very high level screens primarily for brainstorming. This should ideally be done together on a whiteboard to speed things up.

Interactive wireframes + Navigation structure

Once we have a rough idea of what the product is going to be like, I can start creating wireframes. The wireframes will give shape to all the workflows we have had until this point. You'll get to see what information goes on which screens, what actions can a user take on a given screen and how would the navigation work between the different processes/features.

curve bg

User Testing

We run the wireframes through the stakeholders and some users to test how they feel about using the product. We can personally interview them during/after using the wireframe and also use analytics. This is one of the most important parts of the project where we keep making iterations on the wireframes based on our observations and repeat the tests until we get it right.

Style guide

I design the style guide which will include all the components you would need in your product like form fields, typography, navigation etc..

Visual Design

I design the final product using the style guide. This is where we also think about the marketing assets, presentations & any other situation where your product/brand is going to be displayed. This is to ensure a visual consistency in everything related to your product.

A/B, Multivariate Testing

We can test out different versions of the visual design to see what works better. This also includes the content, especially the opening lines, navigation/page titles, & the CTAs.

Interaction Design

I design the transitions between different screens and actions. Like how does your product transition from one step in the user journey to another, what happens when a user clicks on a button, how does the screen look when an action is happening etc. All the animations in the product will be designed at this stage.

Prototyping

When the visual design is approved, I will design a prototype using the screens which can be sent to users for testing. This is the closest to the real application because what they see in the prototype will be exactly they'll see in the final product, except that the data will be static in the prototype. They'll get to see what happens when they click a dropdown, how do they move from one screen to another, how do they interact with certain elements on the screen, etc.

Product Metrics

Once the product is ready to launch, I'll setup analytics so you can see how the real users are using the product.

Product Development

A product is never 'done', it always keeps evolving. Using the above metrics and feedback from the users, we make iterative changes to continually improve the product.
